Having recently got my license and wanting to get out on the bands I have been using a couple of Baofeng handhelds, the GT3-TP, which is an 8W triple power transceiver, and the UV-5RE Plus, which is 5W output. Both are dual band (2m and 70cm) dual standby. For listening they are nice to use, although the original antennas are not particularly brilliant, so I replaced those with NA-771 dual band whips from Nagoya, these offered a rather nice improvement over the originals for a reasonable cost.

Having used the handhelds to participate in a few nets on GB3NB, I was getting reports of quiet audio. This is a known problem with Baofengs, even with the enlarged mic hole mod, I just wasn't getting through well enough for my liking.

As a step towards better audio and more experimentation I have acquired a Yaesu FT-817ND, giving me more bands to listen to and interest with, including access to data modes... something that I really want to play with. Naturally I have ordered the data cable that allows a serial over USB link to the radio from a computer. There was also a blue tooth version... Yeah, got that too... should give me some fun with android as a terminal. The only thing that may be an issue is interference from the blue tooth module, but there should be ample shielding to protect me from that.
